The same design of foot restraint is still in use on Space Shuttle missions and station flights.
This extravehicular activity (EVA) foot restraint was flown aboard one or more missions of the Space Shuttle prior to the loss of Challenger in January 1986. The restraint acted as a platform (as needed) to steady a crewmember during EVA activities. It was sized for the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) boot. The astronaut inserted his foot under the toe bar and then rotated her heel until the boot was secure.
