STS-114 marked the Space Shuttle's return to flight after the loss of Columbia in 2003 |
This embroidered patch was carried back to Earth by the STS-114 crew for ISS Expedition 11 Flight Engineer John Phillips, who remained on the station. The patch was put inside a plastic bag, on which Phillips wrote that it should be given to fellow astronaut Drew Feustel, who served as his ground support. In turn, the instructions read, Feustel was to present the patch to Tim Gagnon, the artist whose design was chosen for the Expedition 11 insignia. On the bag, which has a swatch of velcro on its reverse, Phillips has written to Tim, "Here's an extra flown patch, plus the somewhat tattered poster, John" (the latter referring to the welcome sign Gagnon designed for the crew of STS-114).
