New year, New Horizons: Four years and 1 billion miles beyond its encounter with Pluto, NASA's New Horizons probe flew by "Ultima Thule" (2014 MU69), a city-size object in the Kuiper Belt, on New Year's Day (Jan. 1). The history-making flyby was the first visit to a world discovered after the mission launched and the most distant encounter with a planetary object to date. The data from the flyby may inform theories about how the solar system was formed.

First on the far side: China made history on Wednesday (Jan. 2), achieving the first-ever landing of a spacecraft on the far side of the moon. The robotic Chang'e 4 lander touched down in Von Kármán crater within the South Pole-Aitken basin, where it will deploy a small, six-wheeled rover. The mission is also the first to transmit data from the moon back to Earth using a relay satellite in a halo orbit.

Curry's Moon Landing: One month after he joked about his belief in the Apollo missions, basketball player Stephen Curry has listed a pair of his "Moon Landing" shoes on eBay to raise funds for STEM education. Curry wore the hand-painted sneakers during a Golden State Warriors' game versus the Houston Rockets. The shoes borrow their colors from the Apollo astronauts' moon boots and feature a crater-pocked lunar surface upper design.

Starman aboard: Just in time to mark a year since a spacesuited mannequin was blasted into space while seated in a sports car riding atop SpaceX's first Falcon Heavy rocket, Hot Wheels has released its version of the Tesla Roadster with Starman. The new diecast toy car features a red metallic finish, spoked wheels and a plastic miniature of the Starman, similar to the Mattel Hot Wheels toy mounted to the dashboard of the Roadster now out beyond Mars.

PG 3 X NASA: An NBA All-Star's new Nike's draw inspiration from a NASA facility located in his hometown. Paul George, who plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder, styled his "PG 3 X NASA" sneakers after the Armstrong Flight Research Center Building 703 in Palmdale, California, and his own dream of someday leaving footprints on the moon.

Commercial crew change: Astronaut Mike Fincke has replaced Eric Boe on the crew for Boeing's first piloted test flight of its CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, targeted for launch later this year. According to NASA, Boe "is unable to fly due to medical reasons." Fincke will immediately start training with Boeing's Chris Ferguson and NASA astronaut Nicole Mann, who were assigned to the mission in 2018.

Apollo 11 bag back in court: A woman who sued NASA, won, and then sold an Apollo 11 moon rock bag for nearly $2 million has filed a new lawsuit over the same bag. Nancy Lee Carlson of Illinois claims NASA damaged the bag and retained lunar samples, depriving her the full value of the artifact, as well as causing her emotional distress.

'Apollo 11': A new documentary crafted from never-before-seen footage and thousands of hours of uncatalogued audio has revealed a treasure trove of new details from the Apollo 11 first moon landing mission 50 years ago. Presented by Neon and CNN Films, Todd Douglas Miller's "Apollo 11" has premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

ISS Experience: A new virtual reality project promises to take the public where no VR film series has gone before: on a spacewalk. The ISS Experience, from TIME and Felix & Paul Studios, is a yearlong initiative to capture life aboard the International Space Station, both inside and out in 360-degree stereoscope 3D. The resulting cinematic VR media will be presented in augmented reality, virtual reality and other immersive platforms, including a touring exhibit.

'Apollo 11' trailer: Days after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, "Apollo 11" now has its first movie poster and new trailer.
